On July 12th, 2008, the Harley-Davidson Museum™, located near downtown Milwaukee, will open its doors to the public. The festivities will start with a Harley-Davidson-style ceremony at 10 a.m. on Saturday the 12th and will continue throughout the weekend.

The Harley-Davidson Museum includes 130,000 square feet of display space. The culture of Harley-Davidson will be shown in various exhibits that tell the story of the people, products and history. There will be an incredible collection of Harley-Davidson motorcycles and photo graphs, videos, clothing and also some rare and interesting documents. A portion of the Harley-Davidson archives that have never been open to the public will now be on display for all that are interested. The Living the Legend™ rivets, found on the Living the Legend walls and plazas will include personalized messages from individuals around the world. The Harley-Davidson retail store will have museum inspired items for sale that you cannot buy at any of their other stores.

Tickets will be available under a timed ticketing system in order to make your visit more pleasant with less waiting in line. Purchase your tickets in advance if you want to speed up the process. Be sure to rent the Audio Tour in order to fully enjoy your visit and get the fullest tour experience.

The Harley-Davidson Museum was first supposed to be built a few blocks north of the present location. After a whole expressway, used by many thousands of people per day, was torn down to accommodate the museum, Harley-Davidson changed its mind and decided on a different location at Sixth and Canal Streets. The area that the museum was supposed to be built on is still empty and the expressway is gone forever. In March 2005, Harley-Davidson and the city of Milwaukee signed agreements to the purchase of this land. In February 2006 Harley-Davidson unveiled their plans for the new museum and on June 1st of 2006, ground was broken for the museum. The groundbreaking was not done in the traditional manner by using a shovel. Harley-Davidson broke ground by using one of their motorcycles driven by Scott Parker, the legendary Harley-Davidson dirt track racer. He performed a burnout with his bike and dug a hole with his rear wheel.
